U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance urged the Vatican on Monday (April 13, 2026) to “stick to matters of morality” amid an escalating row between President Donald Trump and Pope Leo over Iran.

“I certainly think that in some cases, it would be best for the Vatican to stick to matters of morality... and let the President United States stick to dictating American public policy,” Mr. Vance told Fox News’s “Special Report with Bret Baier.”

Vance says ball now in Iran's court on peace talks

U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance said on Monday (April 13, 2026) that Washington has made its red lines clear in talks with Iran on ending the West Asia war and it is now up to Tehran to take action.

“I really think the ball is in the Iranian court, because we put a lot on the table. We actually made very clear what our red lines were,” Mr. Vance said in an interview with Fox News.

“There are two things in particular where the president of the United States really said we have no flexibility,” Mr. Vance said. He listed them as U.S. control of Iran’s enriched uranium, and a verification mechanism to ensure it does not develop a nuclear weapon in the future.

U.S. stocks finish higher amid hopes for US-Iran deal as oil price gains moderate

Wall Street stocks shrugged off early weakness and pushed higher on Monday (April 13, 2026) as oil price gains moderated amid optimism that the United States and Iran would strike a peace agreement.

Some analysts cited President Donald Trump’s claim that Iranian representatives phoned him and expressed keen desire for a deal after weekend talks in Pakistan failed to yield an agreement.

Oil prices, which had surged back above $100 a barrel as the United States imposed a blockade on Iran’s imports, later eased. Both major contracts ended higher but below $100 a barrel.

April could shape up to be a tougher month than March for energy markets and the economy due to the West Asia war, the head of the International Energy Agency said Monday (April 13, 2026).

“The longer the disruption is, the more severe the problem becomes,” he told reporters after a meeting at the International Monetary Fund.

Hezbollah official says the group won't abide by any agreements from Lebanon-Israel talks in U.S .

The Lebanese militant group Hezbollah will not abide by any agreements that may result from the direct Lebanon-Israel talks in the United States, negotiations it firmly opposes, a senior Hezbollah official said Monday (April 13, 2026).

Wafiq Safa, a high-ranking member of Hezbollah’s political council, spoke on the eve of the talks expected in Washington between Lebanese and Israeli ambassadors to the U.S. It will be the first time in decades that envoys from Lebanon and Israel, which do not have diplomatic relations, meet face-to-face in direct talks.

“As for the outcomes of this negotiation between Lebanon and the Israeli enemy, we are not interested in or concerned with them at all,” Mr. Safa told The Associated Press.

“We are not bound by what they agree to,” he added in a rare interview with international media. He spoke next to a cemetery as an Israeli drone buzzed overhead.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday (April 13, 2026) called on “all parties” to respect freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, after Iran and subsequently the United States blocked flows through the critical waterway.

The strait, through which a fifth of global oil and gas flows, has become a key flashpoint as the U.S. and Iran attempt to gain leverage over each other during ceasefire negotiations.

Disruptions in the strait “have already had direct effect well beyond the immediate region, with increased global economic fragility and insecurity in many sectors,” the UN chief’s spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement.

The head of the U.N. maritime agency said Monday (April 13, 2026) no country had a legal right to block shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, a trade passage paralysed by the U.S.-Iran war.

“In accordance to international law, no countries have the right to prohibit the right of innocent passage or the freedom of navigation through international straits that are used for international transit,” the International Maritime Organization’s Secretary General Arsenio Dominguez told a news conference.

ASEAN urges Iran peace talks, reopening of Hormuz

ASEAN encouraged the United States and Iran on Monday (April 13, 2026) to press ahead with talks to end the West Asia conflict and ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

Southeast Asian nations like the Philippines and Malaysia rely heavily on oil from the Middle East, much of it exported through the key strait that’s been effectively closed during the conflict.

Foreign ministers of the 11-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) met online to discuss the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran, hours before the US Navy was to start a blockade of Iranian ports.

U.S. President Donald Trump ordered the blockade of the key chokepoint for seaborne oil trade after negotiations between the warring sides in Pakistan collapsed over what the American leader said was the Islamic republic’s refusal to abandon its ambition to develop its own nuclear weapons.

ASEAN Foreign Ministers agreed to urge the United States and Iran to “continue negotiations that will lead to the permanent end of the conflict and lasting peace and stability in the region”, said a joint statement issued after the meeting.

They also called for the “full and effective implementation” of an ongoing two-week ceasefire and the “restoration of the safe, unimpeded, and continuous transit passage of vessels and aircraft in the Strait of Hormuz”.

Around 20% of the world’s seaborne oil trade passes through the Strait of Hormuz, according to the International Energy Agency, 80% of it bound for Asian markets.

The Philippines, which holds ASEAN’s rotating chairmanship, last month adopted a four-day work week for civil servants in a bid to conserve fuel, while Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam encouraged public employees to work from home. -- AFP

Israel says troops fighting Hezbollah surrounded key Lebanon town

The Israeli military said on Monday (April 13, 2026) its troops had completely surrounded a key town in southern Lebanon after killing more than 100 Hezbollah fighters there over the past week.

The announcement marks a significant advance in Israel’s ongoing invasion of southern Lebanon.

“The forces of the 98th Division have completed the encirclement of the town of Bint Jbeil and have begun an assault on it,” the military’s Arabic-language spokesman Colonel Avichay Adraee said on X.

Over the past week, Israeli forces have killed more than 100 Hezbollah fighters in and around the town in “face-to-face” clashes and with air strikes, he said.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at a cabinet meeting that since Sunday the fighting in southern Lebanon had been “concentrated” in Bint Jbeil.

“The fighting continues. It has not stopped — it is ongoing all the time. Yesterday and today it has been concentrated in Bint Jbeil,” he said, according to a video statement released by his office on Monday (April 13, 2026).

Mr. Netanyahu said that Israeli troops were pushing Hezbollah fighters away from the border.

“We are talking about a solid security belt, deeper than before, one that prevents the danger of infiltration and pushes back the anti-tank threat,” he said.

“They are also dealing with the terror villages that were right up against us — every terror position, and there were many, has simply been flattened.”

China urges restraint over U.S. blockade of Strait of Hormuz, backs talks

China urged calm and restraint by all sides on Monday (April 13, 2026), following U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat to ‌blockade the Strait of Hormuz after the failure of weekend talks in Islamabad aimed at ending the Iran war.

Before the war, most Iranian oil exports were shipped to China, the top global importer ‌of crude.

Keeping the key Strait of Hormuz waterway safe, stable and unimpeded served the ‌interest of the international community, foreign ministry spokesperson ‌Guo Jiakun told a regular press conference, when asked about the blockade threat.

“China hopes the relevant parties will abide by the temporary ceasefire arrangements, remain committed to resolving disputes through political and diplomatic ‌means, and avoid a resumption of hostilities,” he said.

China stood ready to “play a positive and constructive role” in resolving the crisis, Guo added, calling ‌the opening talks in the Pakistani capital a step in a direction conducive to easing tension. -- Reuters

West Asia conflict boosts London Heathrow airport traffic

London’s Heathrow Airport announced on Monday (April 13, 2026) a 10% increase in transit passengers during March as the U.S.-Iran war forced Gulf countries to close their airspace.

Total passenger numbers, including those using Europe’s busiest airport to transit, climbed 6.9% to 6.65 million last month compared with a year earlier, Heathrow added in a statement.

“While Heathrow’s long-haul network absorbed demand in March, the outlook for the next few months remains uncertain” amid the conflict, said the airport’s chief executive Thomas Woldbye.

Gulf airlines Emirates, Etihad and Qatar Airways have built their business model on connecting passengers on long-haul flights across the globe.

But following the outbreak of the war on February 28, Iran fired missiles and drones at Israel and U.S. allies in the Gulf, reaching airports and other key infrastructure.

Iraq and Bahrain last week fully reopened their airspace amid the ceasefire agreed between the United States and Iran.

However, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar — whose Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha hubs handle large quantities of long-haul flights — have maintained many restrictions.

Despite the absence of a complete truce, “the knock-on impacts to global supply chains, including fuel, have not affected airport operations”, Heathrow said on Monday (April 13, 2026). -- AFP

Israel seeks to declare Turkey 'new enemy'

Israel “cannot live without an enemy” and its government is now trying to portray Turkey as one, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said on Monday.

Tensions between Turkey and Israel have steadily escalated since the Gaza war erupted following Hamas’s October 7, 2023, cross-border attack in Israel.

The dispute entered a new phase over the weekend after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump of “possible provocations and sabotage” that could jeopardise an initial ceasefire arrangement in the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed on Saturday that Israel would continue to confront Tehran and its regional allies.

Pope Leo hits back at Trump's lambasting, extending feud over Iran war

Pope Leo XIV pushed back on Monday against President Donald Trump’s broadside against him over the U.S.-Israel war in Iran, saying the Vatican’s appeals for peace and reconciliation are rooted in the Gospel, and that he didn’t fear the Trump administration.

“To put my message on the same plane as what the President has attempted to do here, I think is not understanding what the message of the Gospel is,” Pope Leo told The Associated Press aboard the papal plane.

“And I’m sorry to hear that but I will continue on what I believe is the mission of the church in the world today.” History’s first U.S.-born pope stressed that he was not making a direct attack against Mr. Trump or anyone else with his general appeal for peace and criticisms of the “delusion of omnipotence” that is fuelling the Iran wars and other conflicts around the world.
