The Mailam police seized 16 kg of ganja which had been smuggled to Villupuram and arrested one person in this connection near Kotteripattu on Sunday night.
Following a tip-off, a team was conducting checks near the Block Development Office at Kooteripattu when they noticed the suspect R. Rajasekar, 36, of Sowcarpet in Chennai with a bag. When the police checked the bag, they found 16 bundles of ganja in it.
Police said initial inquiry revealed Rajasekar had bought ganja from drug peddlers in Odisha to sell in retail to individuals in Villupuram district. He was arrested and remanded in custody.
In another incident, the Panruti police arrested a 34-year-old man, for allegedly cultivating ganja plant at his residence. The accused, identified as Anand alias Anandakumar was staying at Panruti in Cuddalore district.
Based on a tip-off, a team conducted a search in his house and found six ganja plants. After seizing the plants, the police arrested Anand. A case has been registered.
