On the last day, prominent candidates from multiple parties filed their nominations before the respective Returning Officers in Virudhunagar district on Monday (April 6).

Accompanied by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, BJP Tamil Nadu president Nainar Nagenthran filed his nomination for the Sattur Assembly Constituency.

Earlier, he offered darshan at the Vanni Vinayagar Temple at Odaipatti and at the famous Irukankudi Mariamman Temple. Speaking to reporters, Mr Nagenthran said that he was confident of emerging victorious from the constituency. “The entire State of Tamil Nadu will witness growth and development with support from the Centre,” he said in a confident tone and appealed to the electorate to cast their votes for the NDA candidates.

The DMK candidate Kadarkarairaj, who is in the fray in Sattur AC, exchanged pleasantries when he met Mr Nagenthran. Later, he filed his nomination papers. A large number of DMK functionaries and alliance partners came on a procession to the Returning Officer.

Senior DMK leader and TN Minister KKSSR Ramachandran filed his nomination for the Aruppukottai Assembly segment. He was accompanied by alliance partners from the Secular Progressive Alliance.

The DMDK was represented by Vijaya Prabhakaran, son of Premallatha Vijaykanth for the Virudhunagar Assembly Constituency. Minister and senior leader Thangam Thennarasu accompanied the candidate.

The AIADMK candidate Rajenthra Bhalaji representing Sivakasi Assembly Constituency filed his nomination paper before the Returning Officer. Later, he boarded an open jeep and began campaigning. In his address, he said that the voters in TN were fed up with the DMK rule. The AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami would lead the State and as CM restore the lost sheen.

Traffic chaos in many points

With the political parties and their candidates movement, normal vehicular movement came to a standstill in many points in the district. Hotels and road side tea stalls were filled with party functionaries.

There were a few instances of uneasy calm before the offices of the Returning Officers as the police refused to allow the functionaries who claimed that they should be given entry to be with their candidates. However, the police pacified them and said that the EC guidelines permitted only five persons with the candidate while nomination and asked them to stay away.

There were also some issues when a few unauthorised persons vehicles were permitted to which the political party functionaries raised objections. Senior officers rushed in and pacified at the offices.
