The inclusion of Persons with Disabilities (PwD) in Indian medical education continues to be marred by exclusion and rigid eligibility norms. The vision of equality, dignity, and social justice for this cohort remains elusive with something as basic as a single window documentation of the exact number of PwD medical students and doctors being non-existent currently in the country. This weakens specific policy design, monitoring of reservation compliance and long-term workforce planning in healthcare.
In India, medical colleges are often guided by rigid “fitness to practice” standards set by bodies like the National Medical Commission (NMC), which serves as the primary regulatory body for medical education and practice.
