Light to moderate rainfall was experienced in Dindigul city and suburban areas including upper Kodaikanal during the last 24 hours that the district recorded 87.32 mm rainfall on Saturday.
Though the poor upkeep of the Corporation of Dindigul came in for criticism, the majority of the residents said that it was a big relief from the sweltering heat over the last 30 to 45 days. No doubt, the summer rain has brought down the mercury level but the gutters were overflowing and there were fears that this may mix with potable water.
Many low lying areas were inundated and vehicular movement was affected in pockets like Nagal Nagar, Tiruchi Road, Corporation Office Road, Old Karur Road and in Balakrishnapuram under pass, residents said and added that the open drainage in many pockets were overflowing due to rainfall.
In Kodaikanal, Bryant Park, rainfall was recorded at 10.92 mm, Chatrapatti: 41.20 mm, Vedasandur: 8, Palani: 2 and Dindigul recorded 1.8 mm. The average rainfall was at 87.32 mm in the district in the last 24 hours ending 6 a.m. on Saturday.
During the day, the sky was overcast and the weather was pleasant across the district. In Natham, there was rain for about an hour from 12 noon.
In neighbouring Theni district, Bodinayakkanur recorded 86.2 mm rainfall while Periyar dam had 16.8, Shanmuganadhi: 3.4, Aranmanaipudur: 16.4, Sothuparai: 16.4 mm.
Apart from Vaigai dam, the storage level in Manjalar dam, Sothuparai and Shanmuganadhi dam was appreciable in the last 24 hours, WRD officials said.
