Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday said that caste discrimination could be eradicated only through the spread of rational thought and scientific temper, and called for strengthening social harmony in a diverse society.
Speaking after inaugurating the newly constructed Sri Bhojalingeshwara temple at Sugur (N) village in Chittapur taluk, Kalaburagi district, the Chief Minister said the teachings of Bhojalingeshwara emphasised truth, equality and unity among people.
“Society is diverse with different religions, languages and cultures. In such a society, unity is essential. No religion preaches hatred; a humane society can be built only when people learn to love each other,” he said.
The Chief Minister cautioned against divisive forces that seek to create discord in the name of religion and caste. “There are vested interests that try to pit one community against another for their own benefit. People should not fall prey to such attempts. We must remain united and uphold social harmony,” he said.
Referring to the teachings of Basavanna, Sufi saints and other reformers, Mr. Siddaramaiah said the principles of ‘kayaka’ and ‘dasoha’ were essential for building an equitable society. “Everyone must work hard and share what they earn. Equality can be achieved only when every individual gains economic and social strength,” he said.
He also stressed the need to reject superstition and regressive beliefs. “Even today, some people attribute their hardships to past life deeds. Such beliefs are unscientific. Education with a rational and scientific outlook is necessary to challenge the caste system and social inequalities,” he said.
The Chief Minister urged people to internalise the ideals of social reformers such as Basavanna and Kanakadasa and work towards building a society free of caste divisions.
“Though these ideals exist, caste has not been eradicated. We must practise equality in our daily lives,” he said.
Mr. Siddaramaiah also promised that the government would extend support for the development of the Bhojalingeshwara Mutt, including assistance for a hostel and other facilities, based on representations submitted by the seers.
Rural Development and Panchayat Raj and district in-charge Minister Priyank Kharge, who was present on the occasion, announced that ₹1 crore sanctioned earlier for the development of the mutt and related works would be released, and promised additional funding.
The programme also saw the consecration of the deity, launch of a silver chariot procession and inauguration of a Kalyana Mantapa.
