Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma on Wednesday (May 13, 2026) sought an expeditious completion of projects under a pact signed with the Haryana Government in February 2024 for getting the State’s full share of 1.119 billion cubic metre water as per the 1994 Yamuna Water Agreement. The availability of water will resolve the water shortage issue in Shekhawati region.

Rajasthan and Haryana have jointly prepared a detailed project report (DPR) for the transfer of Rajasthan’s share of water from Hathni Kund barrage in Haryana through underground pipelines and its subsequent utilisation in areas such as Sikar, Jhunjhunu and Churu.

Mr. Sharma met his Haryana counterpart Nayab Singh Saini and Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil during his visit to New Delhi and deliberated on a timeline for laying the pipelines. He also called for evolving consensus over the long-delayed Kishau Multipurpose Project on Tons river along the Uttarakhand-Himachal Pradesh border, which would provide irrigation and drinking waters to several northern States.

The Rajasthan Government has already approved its share of funds in the Renukaji, Lakhwar, and Kishau projects on Yamuna and its tributaries for ensuring the completion of work on time, after which the State will get its share of 201 million cubic metre water.

Mr. Sharma said the Haryana Government had provided information about the majority of tapping points, following the preparation of DPR, for supplying drinking water to the specific areas in accordance with the agreement. “The DRP will be submitted shortly to the Central Water Commission for initiation of its review process,” he said.

If an information about any additional tapping points is provided later, it will be incorporated into the DPR during the review. The Chief Minister said the work on the ground would commence immediately after the Central Water Commission’s approval of the DPR.

The Chaudhary Kumbharam Lift Canal, built under the Indira Gandhi Canal Project, at present supplies 1,500 cusecs of water to some areas of Shekhawati. The people in the region have been demanding that the State’s full share of water be obtained from Tajewala Head and supplied to Sikar division through pipelines.
