The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP), Uttar Pradesh unit on Tuesday (May 12, 2026) announced that they will organise protests at all the district headquarters in U.P. against the alleged objectionable comment made by Samajwadi Party (SP) Lok Sabha MP Ajendra Singh Lodhi on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“The BJP will organize massive protests at all the district headquarters of the state against the indecent and unbecoming remarks made by Samajwadi Party MP against the Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. The protest will be organized at the district level in the Collectorate premises, the party’s women officials, public representatives and workers will participate along with a large number. The indecent language being used by SP MP on personal level under the guise of political opposition is against the healthy tradition of Indian politics. The BJP will not tolerate this and will oppose the SP,” State General Secretary of the BJP Sanjay Rai said. 

U.P. CM Yogi Adityanath described the comment as an insult to the trust of 145 crore countrymen and the democratic dignity of India. “The unparliamentary remarks made by an MP against the world’s most popular leader, respected Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji are not only indecent and unforgivable, but are also a serious blow to Indian democratic norms. This act reveals political misbehavior, ideological bankruptcy and disrespect for the decency of public life. This is also an insult to the mandate, trust of 145 crore countrymen and the democratic dignity of India. The people of the country will definitely give a reply to such unruly behavior when the time comes,” wrote Mr. Adityanath on X.

Earlier, the SP Lok Sabha MP Ajendra Singh Lodhi was booked in Mahoba under charges of assault on a public official and promoting hate after he called Prime Minister Narendra Modi “anti-national,” police said on Tuesday (May 12, 2026). Mr. Lodhi, the Lok Sabha MP from the Hamirpur constituency, was booked on May 11, under sections 132 (assault on a public official), 189(2) (unlawful assembly), 196(1) (promoting enmity), and 352 (intentional insult) of the BNS. On May 11, Mr. Lodhi and his supporters submitted an 11-point memorandum to the Power department flagging power cuts and issues with smart metres, among other issues. The BJP alleged that the SP MP’s march to the government office caused a blockade, disrupted traffic, and hindered the work of public employees. He also alleged that Mr. Lodhi called Mr. Modi “anti-national”.

A video of the incident, which surfaced on social media, showed the lawmaker criticising Mr. Modi’s austerity appeal to the people regarding gold and fuel consumption. The SP MP allegedly used an expletive against Mr. Modi and called him a “desh-virodhi [anti-national]” Prime Minister.

The SP president Akhilesh Yadav distanced the party from the comment. “We have never been in favour of such language being used against anyone. I am not in favour of what Ajendra Singh said. He expressed his pain, but the language used to express it was not right,” said Mr. Yadav in Prayagraj.
