What students need to know about AI screening of resumes

Most resumes are not necessarily read by a human at first. Instead, companies rely on software to sort through applicants before a human ever reviews any material. For students, especially those applying to internships or entry-level roles, understanding how to communicate with this software is essential. Evidence shows that modifying a resume to align its wording with the job description increases the chances of being selected for an interview. The process demands both awareness and precision.

Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) are the primary software used to scan each resume for specific keywords and skills. For instance, if a job description requests “Python” but the resume only lists “programming experience”, the ATS may overlook the application.

What to do

To address this, students should begin by reviewing the job description and listing the exact skills and tools the employer requires, such as “Microsoft Excel”, “Python”, or “Tableau”. If those skills are present, the resume should mirror the same language. For example, replacing generic statements like “worked on data projects using spreadsheets and coding” with “completed data analysis projects using Microsoft Excel and Python” increases the likelihood of passing the ATS screen.

Simple formatting is critical. Tables, graphics, text boxes, and multi-column layouts can confuse ATS software and result in information being lost. A single-column format, standard fonts, and clear section headings are best practice.

Focus on achievements, not just duties. If you have limited work experience, highlight academic projects, internships, hackathons, or leadership roles. Use numbers and measurable outcomes to make your profile credible and easy to evaluate. For example: led a team of five students for a college project; increased event participation by 30%; completed a data analysis project within three weeks

Each point should begin with a strong action verb: “built”, “analysed”, “designed”. or “implemented”. Skills and tools should be listed both in full and as abbreviations. For example, Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). Include only skills that can be confidently discussed in an interview. Grouping skills into categories such as “Technical Skills”, “Tools”, or “Languages” increases clarity.

Meticulous proofreading is mandatory. Typos or formatting errors can undermine a strong application. Applicants should also verify the required file format — some ATS cannot read PDFs, so DOCX may be safer. Files should be named professionally, such as Name_DataAnalyst.pdf.

Before submission, preview the resume as plain text or use an online ATS scanner. While these tools are not infallible, they offer insight into how the resume will appear to software. Ultimately, clarity and organisation remain paramount.

The goal is not to manipulate the software, but to present strengths clearly. Even with limited experience, candidates can highlight relevant projects, certifications, internships, or technical skills, focusing on what matters for the target role.

AI screening is now a standard part of hiring. Mastering this process gives candidates a distinct advantage in a competitive landscape.
