BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari is set to take oath as the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal on Saturday (May 9, 2026). The newly elected MLAs have unanimously elected Mr. Adhikari as the leader of their legislative party.
Mr. Adhikari, 57, contested and won from both Nandigram and Bhabanipur in the recently concluded Assembly election. He had defeated former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur by a margin of 15,115 votes.
Since the election results were announced on Monday (May 4, 2026), instances of post-poll violence erupted across Bengal. On Wednesday (May 6, 2026), BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari’s personal assistant was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in the Madhyamgram area in the State’s North 24 Parganas district.

Suvendu Adhikari set to take oath as the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal
Newly elected MLAs of the Bharatiya Janata Party in West Bengal unanimously elected Suvendu Adhikari as leader of their legislature party on yesterday. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who presided over the meeting, said all proposals were received in favour of Mr. Adhikari.
Accompanied by several leaders of the BJP’s State unit, including Dilip Ghosh, Locket Chatterjee, and Tapas Roy, the Chief Minister-designate reached Lok Bhavan and met Governor R.N. Ravi to stake claim to form the government. The BJP had won 207 seats in the 294-member Legislative Assembly while the Trinamool Congress was reduced to 80 seats.
