The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday (June 14, 2026) held a protest in Chhatarpur against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government over the ongoing water shortage in parts of the city and alleged that the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) was deliberately withholding water supply solely to facilitate the black marketing of water.
AAP councillor from Chhatarpur Pinky Naresh Tyagi alleged that while drinking water was reaching the homes in affluent areas in the Chhatarpur Assembly constituency, the poor were being forced to struggle for every single drop. “If there is a water shortage in Delhi, then how are tankers immediately reaching the homes of the rich when money is paid?” she asked.
“The water problem is evident to everyone. Despite water being available, people are not receiving it. Why is the BJP government falsely claiming that there is a water shortage and that Delhi is therefore not getting water? If there is no water, then how are tankers arriving? These tankers also go only to areas where financially capable people live, because water is being sold for money,” she said.
The party said that the constituency was among the most dependent areas on water tankers and that its MLA belongs to the BJP.
“The first thing a person needs upon waking up in the morning is water. A person may survive for some time without food, but cannot stay alive without water. On one hand, these people say that ‘water is life,’ and on the other hand, they are taking that life away from the public,” she said.
The party alleged that residents had received little to no water for most of the summer and that even when the supply was restored, it was available only in small quantities.
Earlier this month, Water Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh had said that some areas receive more water even as other areas face water shortages, and the government was working on rationalisation of water supply across different parts of the city to solve the problem.
