The Kottur police in Coimbatore district arrested a 49-year-old man from Madurai district on Thursday in connection with a house burglary and recovered 28 sovereigns of gold jewellery and ₹30,000 in cash.

According to the police, R. Rushyendramani (61) had locked his house and gone to a temple with his family on May 22. During his absence, burglars allegedly broke open the doors of the house and stole the jewellery and cash kept in a bureau.

Based on his complaint, the Kottur police registered a case and formed special teams to investigate the theft. The investigation led to the arrest of P. Sivaraj (49), a native of Madurai district. The stolen property was recovered from him, police said. He was produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody

Trial in Sulur sexual assault and murder case continues

The trial in the sexual assault and murder case of a 10-year-old girl from Sulur continued before the Special Court for cases registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act in Coimbatore on Thursday.

The investigation officer, Sulur Inspector of Police, deposed before Judge T. Bagavathiammal. Examination of witnesses also continued. The girl’s father was among the witnesses examined on the first day of the trial on Wednesday. The proceedings were held in camera.

Elephant chases KSRTC bus on Valparai–Athirappilly road

A Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus was chased and attacked by a wild elephant on Valparai–Athirappilly road on Wednesday night.

According to sources, the driver reversed the bus after spotting a herd of elephants near the road. A lone elephant then chased and attacked the vehicle, causing panic among passengers.

Passengers recorded the incident on their mobile phones, and videos of the elephant chasing the bus have since gone viral on social media. No injuries were reported.

Elephant chases KSRTC bus on Valparai–Athirappilly road

The Peelamedu police arrested two persons for allegedly exhuming a body and stealing a gold chain worth about ₹4 lakh from a grave at the Sowripalayam cemetery in Coimbatore.

The chain had been buried along with N. Nagaraj, a fish vendor from Udayampalayam Main Road, who died on June 6. The theft came to light when his family visited the cemetery on June 19 for the 16th-day rituals.

Police said the accused were Nagaraj’s relative Sakthivel, Manikandan and Karthikeyan of Nagapattinam district. Manikandan and Karthikeyan were arrested and remanded in judicial custody, while efforts are on to trace Sakthivel.
