The Hindu Bureau · 2026-06-24 · via The Hindu: Latest News today from India and the World, Breaking news, Top Headlines and Trending News Videos.

Chaos broke out at the Karaikudi City Municipal Corporation council meeting here on Wednesday as councillors chanted slogans, condemning the failure to bring forward resolutions regarding development works for the wards. Further, an AIADMK councillor resorted to a dharna.

The Karaikudi City Municipal Corporation meeting was held after four months under the chairmanship of Mayor (In-charge) Gunasekaran.

As soon as the meeting commenced, a majority of the councillors questioned, “Why did you convene the meeting without bringing forward a single resolution regarding development schemes for any of the 36 wards?”

As a result, uproar and chaos prevailed for some time. Following this, Mr. Gunasekaran pacified them, and the meeting resumed.

Noticing that only the portrait of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay was present in the meeting hall, DMK councillors stated that those of former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin should be placed, and AIADMK councillors stated that the portraits of former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami should also be placed.

After their request was accepted, the AIADMK councillors immediately placed the photos of Mr. Palaniswami that they had brought along. As the DMK councillors had not brought Mr. Stalin’s photograph with them, they brought it from outside and placed it later in the hall.

Continuing further, AIADMK councillor Prakash spoke, saying, “During the corporation meeting held on February 13, I engaged in a dharna stating that road works had not been carried out in the 27th ward. At that time, the Mayor and the Commissioner promised that the road works would be undertaken immediately. However, the road works have not commenced till now. I condemn this.”

Subsequently, he squatted on the floor in front of the Mayor’s seat. Ignoring this, they continued the meeting.

Corporation Commisoner Babu assured the councillors that their demands would be fulfilled soon. Responding to him, Mr. Prakash warned, “If the road works are not started, I will mobilise the people of the ward and launch a massive protest.”

While the DMK and AIADMK councillors chanted slogans against each other, asking to place the photographs of M.K. Stalin and Palaniswami in the meeting hall, independent councillor Meyyar insisted that “the photograph of actor Trisha be placed in the meeting hall and described her as ‘future CM,” amidst laughter around.”
