The Srirangam police arrested a 65-year-old Congress man for allegedly possessing banned tobacco products near the Srirangam Old Bus Stand on Saturday.

The accused, S. Natarajan, 65, a resident of Mela Adayavalanjan Street in Srirangam, is said to be a secretary of the Congress committee in Srirangam. According to police sources and the FIR, the police received information that banned tobacco products were being sold near the Srirangam Old Bus Stand. Acting on the tip-off, a police team conducted a search in the area and allegedly seized 104 packets of banned tobacco products weighing about 2.08 kg from Natarajan’s possession.

He was arrested and later released on bail. Further investigation is under way.
