Rugby, June 25: The jubilee of the telephone is being celebrated today.

At the institution of Electrical Engineers, Sir Oliver Lodge delivered a lecture, which was broadcast, on the history of the development of the telephone. Newspapers pay tributes to the memory of Professor Alexander Graham Bell, who is regarded as “the father of the telephone.” The story is retold how Mr. Bell, a native of Edinburgh, married a girl who had the misfortune to be deaf and how he tried to invent an instrument that would enable her to hear. He chanced to discover the machine that enabled one to hear from a long distance. This he patented in America where he and his wife were living. He brought his invention to England in 1877 and England’s first telephone company was registered in June of the following year. The first exchange was opened in August, 1879 at Coleman Street in the City of London with fewer than a dozen subscribers.
