Prices of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in Maharashtra’s Mumbai were hiked ₹2 per kilogram on Saturday (May 20, 2026) — the second such hike in 16 days — amid a rise in gas procurement costs as supply disruptions continue due to the conflict in West Asia.

In addition to CNG, Mahanagar Gas Ltd (MGL) — the leading city-gas distributor in Mumbai and adjoining areas — also increased the rates of domestic piped natural gas (D-PNG) by ₹0.5 per standard cubic metre (SCM).

CNG in Mumbai and adjoining areas is now being sold at ₹86 per kilogram. The effective rate of domestic-PNG is now ₹52 per standard cubic metre.

“Due to a significant increase in gas procurement costs caused by reduced allocation of domestic gas, increased dependence on higher-cost gas sources and depreciation of the Indian Rupee, the overall cost has risen considerably,” MGL said in a statement following the hike.

The company continues to “explore avenues to optimise costs and pass on benefits to consumers, ensuring the widespread adoption of natural gas as a cleaner fuel alternative”, it added.

With the latest hike, price of CNG in Mumbai has increased ₹4 per kilogram since May 14 — the first hike in prices by MGL.

On May 25, MGL had apprised about having to discontinue all support schemes and subsidies for commercial customers due to the emanating pressure of the West Asian crisis.

Following a largely similar trend, Indraprastha Gas Limited — the leading city-gas distributor in North India — has also increased price of CNG by ₹6 per kg across four tranches.

Other city-gas distributors across the country too have mirrored similar trends in different piecemeal manner and magnitude.
