The Election Commission (ECI) on Thursday (May 7, 2026) announced the lifting of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) following the declaration of results of Assembly elections of Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Union Territory of Puducherry, and by-elections in Assembly constituencies of Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Nagaland, and Tripura.

The MCC would, however, remain operational in Falta Assembly constituency of West Bengal, where a fresh poll has been ordered by the Commission.

“Now that the results in respect of general election to the legislative assemblies of Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and UT of Puducherry, 2026 and by-elections in Assembly constituencies of Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Nagaland, and Tripura have been declared by the concerned Returning Officers,... the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) has ceased to be in operation with immediate effect,” the ECI said in a letter to the chief secretaries and Chief Electoral Officers of these States.

Assembly polls were held in four States and Union Territories between April 9-29. The counting was held on May 4.
