Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar on Friday stated that the increase in petrol and diesel prices reflects the failure of the central government’s foreign policy.
Addressing the media in Thoothukudi airport, he pointed out that as India does not have good relations with neighbouring countries it has lead to this situation.
He further remarked that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has suggested reducing petrol and diesel consumption and using public transport, which he described as impractical.
He objected to the Prime Minister’s remarks advising people not to buy gold, pointing out that gold chains and ‘thali’ holds emotional value in India. He noted that even Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has announced schemes providing gold for ‘thali’.
He questioned how people could be advised not to purchase gold when prices have become unaffordable. He contrasted the current situation with the Congress-led UPA government stating that gold has now become too expensive for people.
Drawing comparison with Covid-19 pandemic period, he said that just as people were earlier asked to light lamps and clap hands, they are now being told not to buy gold, reduce fuel usage, rely on public transport and avoid foreign travel, suggestions he deemed unrealistic.
He noted that these developments indicate the failure of the BJP government at the national level and stressed the need for inclusive consultations and well-planned policy measures to help the country.
Regarding Congress party’s participation in Tamil Nadu government, he said it was a policy decision of the party leadership and declined to comment further.
He had come to Thoothukudi with his family to offer prayers at Sri Subramanyaswamy Temple in Tiruchendur.
