S. Rajendran, a three-time Communist Party of India (Marxist) MLA who contested as a National Democratic Alliance candidate in the Devikulam constituency, has triggered the loss of a traditional Left Democratic Front stronghold in the district’s plantation hub.
After months of discussion, Mr. Rajendran joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and was fielded in Devikulam. Traditionally, plantation workers constitute the majority of voters in the region, an area where Left parties have historically maintained deep influence. However, Mr. Rajendran’s move to the BJP saw him secure 15,032 votes — largely from the plantation sector — effectively paving the way for a United Democratic Front victory.
