Following the recent fire tragedy in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh authorities on Wednesday (June 24, 2026) intensified a Statewide drive against coaching centres and institutions violating safety norms, with fresh inspections conducted in the State capital and several institutes sealed in Mathura and Aligarh.

A joint team of the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA), fire department and electricity department carried out inspections of coaching institutes in the Aliganj-Kapoorthala area, officials said.

During the drive, authorities allegedly found deficiencies in safety standards at several coaching centres. At least half a dozen coaching institutes were sealed by the authorities over alleged deficiencies in safety standards in Lucknow.

Officials sought approved building maps and other documents from property owners. Notices were issued to institutes that failed to produce the required records. The authorities directed all coaching operators to ensure compliance with fire safety measures and building regulations, warning that further action would be taken against violators.

The action comes a day after the State government launched a special campaign against illegal coaching centres and institutions flouting safety norms following the fire tragedy in Lucknow that claimed 15 lives.

In Mathura, district authorities sealed more than two dozen coaching centres, libraries, hotels and guest houses allegedly operating in violation of safety and regulatory norms.

Officials said six coaching centres, four libraries and two hotels in Mathura, along with 16 guest houses in Vrindavan, were sealed during a special drive conducted by teams formed after an emergency meeting convened by District Magistrate Chandra Prakash Singh.

City Magistrate Anupam Mishra said the action targeted institutions operating from basements and underground premises without adequate safety measures, approved building plans or mandatory registrations.

According to officials, several establishments lacked fire-fighting equipment and emergency arrangements, while some were allegedly operating without registration. Notices were also issued to several institutions directing them to furnish documents related to registration, operation and no-objection certificates.

Authorities said records of the District Inspector of Schools showed that only 57 of nearly 300 coaching centres operating in Mathura were registered, and action would continue against unauthorised institutions.

Meanwhile, in Aligarh, District Magistrate Avinash Kumar announced the formation of a unified fire safety central committee to conduct audits of fire safety compliance in schools, coaching centres, libraries, malls, cinema halls, hospitals and multi-storey buildings.

The district administration carried out inspections of registered coaching centres and libraries over the past 48 hours and ordered the closure of a coaching institute that was allegedly operating without mandatory registration.

Officials said the newly constituted committee would hold monthly review meetings and recommend action against institutions found violating fire safety regulations.

On Tuesday (June 23, 2026), authorities across Uttar Pradesh sealed dozens of coaching centres and issued notices to institutions found violating safety norms.

Action was reported from districts including Prayagraj, Kanpur, Deoria, Jaunpur, Mau, Moradabad, Amroha and Etah as part of the Statewide enforcement campaign.

Higher Education Minister Yogendra Upadhyay said all district magistrates had been directed to conduct comprehensive surveys of coaching institutes and ensure strict action against institutions operating without registration under the Uttar Pradesh Coaching Regulation Act, 2002.

The State government has also initiated a broader review of illegal buildings, basement establishments and multi-storey structures housing coaching centres, hotels, hospitals and gyms following the Lucknow fire tragedy.
