Egypt and Iran clash in their final group game on Friday (June 26, 2026), with good chances of progressing, but geopolitical tensions between Iran and the co-hosts, the United States, loom large over the match. 

A first World Cup win for seven-times ‌African champions Egypt, 92 years after their debut, put them in charge, though Iran’s dogged performances in draws with Belgium ‌and New Zealand mean victory could also see them top ‌Group ⁠G.

Iran has had to grapple ‌with travel restrictions, which coach Amir Ghalenoei said made them the tournament’s “most oppressed team”, though the U.S. said this week that Iran would be allowed to travel two days before the game instead ‌of one.

For Egypt, a point is enough to top Group G. For Iran, they will need a win to confirm passage into the Round of 32, although a draw might help their chances depending on the outcome of the Belgium-New Zealand game.
