Discover why iconic Switzerland goalkeeper Yann Sommer will not be playing in its FIFA World Cup 2026 opener against Qatar.

Switzerland kicks off its FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign against Qatar at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium in San Francisco on Saturday, June 13.

However, it will do so without Yann Sommer, a veteran of the net in many international tournaments.

Sommer will not feature at the FIFA World Cup 2026 as he has retired from international football in 2024 after the European Championships.

He remains active in club football, playing for Inter Milan in the Serie A and UEFA Champions League.
