Colombia began its FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a 3-1 win against debutant Uzbekistan in the Group K match at the Mexico City Stadium on Wednesday.
In a game of few chances, it was Colombia which took the lead in the 41st minute after Daniel Munoz produced a well-timed run and finish after reaching a chipped cross from Luis Diaz.
Uzbekistan responded 15 minutes into the second half with 22-year-old Abbosbek Fayzullaev grabbing the nation’s first-ever goal in the World Cup with an easy tap in header.
However, parity lasted just three minutes as Diaz found the back of the net with a clean finish from inside the box.
The game was put to bed in the ninth minute of added time as substitutes Cucho Hernandez and Jaminton Campaz combined, with the latter heading in from close range.
