Host United States of America is set to take on Paraguay in both countries’ first match of the FIFA World Cup 2026, to be held at the Los Angeles Stadium. This will be the USA’s first FIFA World Cup match on home soil since the 1994 FIFA World Cup, where it was knocked out by eventual winner Brazil in the Round of 16.

In the previous edition, USA finished second in its group but was knocked out by the Netherlands in the Round of 16. On the other hand, Paraguay’s last appearance at the tournament was in 2010, where it made it to the quarterfinal before losing to eventual winner Spain.
The USA vs Paraguay FIFA World Cup 2026 match will be officiated by Dutch referee Danny Makkelie.
Makkelie has been a FIFA listed referee since 2011. This will the the Dutchman’s second FIFA World Cup, having officiated two group stage matches in the 2022 edition. He primarily officiates in the Eredivisie, and also officiated eight 2025/26 UEFA Champions League matches.
Throughout his career, Makkelie has taken charge of 779 games across all competitions, having given out 2508 yellow cards (3.21 per game), and 186 red cards (0.24 per game).
The 43-year-old has also refereed at the UEFA Euros at the 2021 and 2024 editions, as well as the 2021 and 2025 FIFA Club World Cups.
