The FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage is coming to a close with 32 teams looking to seal their spots in the next round of the competition.
This edition features an expanded 48 teams across 12 groups, with the top two from each group advancing to the new round of 32 along with the best eight third-placed teams.
With the competition undergoing a revamp, certain tweaks were also made to the rules on bookings to ensure that fewer players are suspended for key knockout fixtures.
According to FIFA regulations, players are required to serve a one-match ban if they are shown two yellow cards in two different matches. In previous editions, yellow cards were cancelled after the quarterfinal stage.
However, this time around, owing to the extra knockout round, single yellow cards will be wiped after the group stage and again after the quarterfinals.
If a player has received two yellow cards across three games in the group stage, then he will miss the round of 32 clash if his nation advances.
