Ecuador pulled off a thrilling 2-1 win over Germany in its Group E FIFA World Cup 2026 encounter at the New York/New Jersey Stadium on Thursday.

The win put the South American side on top of the table among the best third-placed teams, and seal its berth in the Round of 32.

This was Ecuador’s first-ever victory over the four-time world champion and its first knockout qualification since 2006.

Ecuador fell behind to a Leroy Sane goal inside two minutes from kick-off before Nilson Angulo pulled one back in the ninth minute.

With 11 minutes to go, Gonzalo Plato poked home from a corner kick to spark jubilant celebrations.
