India U-17 made a disappointing return to Asia’s premier youth competition, losing 4-0 to three-time semifinalist Australia in its AFC U-17 Asian Cup 2026 opener at the King Abdullah Sports City in Saudi Arabia.
There was added expectation around India after North Korea pulled out of the tournament, reducing its group to three teams, including Uzbekistan and Australia.
Australia started on the front foot, taking an early lead inside the first quarter before doubling its advantage through a Max Court penalty. Court scored again in the second half before Henrique Oliveira sealed the win for the Australian side.
India will take on Uzbekistan in its next match on May 10.
