Bosnia and Herzegovina was reduced to 10 men against Switzerland when one of its centre-backs was given a straight red card in their group-stage match in Los Angeles, USA, on Thursday.

Tarik Muharemovic tried to stop Breel Embolo in the final third, just in front of his penalty box and was immediately sent off for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Who is Tarik Muharemovic, who got a straight red card against Switzerland in the World Cup?

Tarik Muharemovic is a 23-year-old centre-back who plays for Sassuolo in the Italian top flight. Muharemovic was born in Slovenia and graduated from the youth academy of Austrian side Wolfsberger AC, before breaking into the first team of that club.

In 2021, he moved to the reserve side of Juventus, where he spent four seasons before moving to Sassulo on loan for the 2024-25 season. He played 28 times for the club that season, scoring once, which led to the club making his loan move permanent last season.
