An Uber driver ferrying Argentina fans to a FIFA World Cup match was among four people injured in a series of shootings across Kansas City, Missouri, that killed one man, police said.

A 22-year-old suspect, described by authorities as armed and dangerous, remained at large on Thursday.

The five shootings took place on Tuesday between 6 p.m. and 6.30 p.m. along a five-mile stretch of the city. Three occurred on Interstates 70 and 670 through downtown Kansas City, while the remaining two happened further east on Truman Road. All were at least four miles from Arrowhead Stadium, where Argentina was playing Algeria.

Two American Argentina supporters told Argentine newspaper La Nación that a car pulled alongside the Uber they were travelling in and fired two shots, striking the driver in the leg. They initially mistook the gunfire for a burst tyre before realising the driver had been wounded.

The fans were taken to a police station to give statements before officers drove them to the stadium in patrol vehicles. Police Captain Jacob Becchina said the driver’s injuries were not life-threatening.

Police said all three highway shootings involved eastbound vehicles, with one crossing over from neighbouring Kansas.

Three adults and a teenager were hospitalised, with one adult in a life-threatening condition.

At about 6.30 p.m., officers responded to reports of a vehicle crashing into a pole on Truman Road, east of the earlier shootings. The driver was taken to hospital, where doctors discovered a gunshot wound. He later died.

“Victims all indicated they were driving down the highway or roadway when one or more shots were fired into their vehicles,” Becchina said in an email.

Detectives believe the non-fatal shootings were carried out by the same suspect as he travelled east.

Investigators later tracked the suspect to a home in the suburb of Independence, about two miles east of where the fatal victim was found. A standoff followed, but when officers entered the property at around 8 a.m. on Wednesday, the suspect was no longer there.

Authorities in Kansas City, Kansas, have issued a warrant for the suspect in connection with an alleged illegal discharge of a firearm on June 11, according to police spokesperson Nancy Chartrand.
