Bayern Munich veteran Manuel Neuer announced on Friday that he has extended his contract with the German champion by one year, until 2027.
The 40-year-old goalkeeper’s deal was set to expire in the summer, but he will stay on in Munich for what will be his 16th year at the Bavarian club.
“It was a clear decision after taking some time to reflect,” Neuer said.
“All the conditions are met here: with this team we can beat any opponent.”
Considered among the best goalkeepers in history, Neuer finished third in the Ballon d’Or voting in 2014 behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. It remains the most recent occasion a goalkeeper made the top three.
German tabloid Bild reported that Neuer will play fewer matches in the 2026-27 season as he helps facilitate a smooth transition to back-up goalkeeper Jonas Urbig.

Bayern has also extended the contract of third-choice goalkeeper Sven Ulreich for another season.
A 2014 World Cup winner with Germany, Neuer stayed on at Bayern after ending his international career in 2024. He won 124 caps for the four-time world champion.
The veteran was widely praised for his performance in the first leg of Bayern’s Champions League quarterfinal away win over Real Madrid, where he was named UEFA’s player of the match.
Neuer has enjoyed a glittering career at Bayern since joining from boyhood club Schalke in 2011.
In addition to two Champions League titles, he has won the Bundesliga a record 13 times, the joint-most alongside long-time teammate Thomas Mueller.
