Tony Popovic is leading Australia into the FIFA World Cup 2026. He was appointed in 2024 to replace Graham Arnold, who is now the coach of Iraq and also at the World Cup.
One of Popovic’s final acts in international football as a player was to help Australia qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2006. 20 years later, he will be leading them as a manager.
In his 18 matches in charge of Australia, Popovic has won 10, drawn four and lost four.
Ahead of the World Cup, Popovic had signed a contract extension that will take him through to the Asian Cup early next year.
“I’m delighted that I will continue to coach the Socceroos through to the Asian Cup,” said Popovic after signing the contract extension,
“From the moment I took over, I have tried to factor in the long-term interests of the Socceroos while ensuring that we achieve the short-term results, which in the first instance was qualifying for the World Cup.
“I’m proud to lead my country into a World Cup, but most importantly, I want to ensure that our team is fully prepared and focused on our group matches against Turkey, the United States, and Paraguay.”
