Brazil and Scotland will both look to secure a spot in the round of 32 at the FIFA World Cup as the two sides face off in their last group-stage match in Miami on Wednesday.
Scotland comes into the match after a 0-1 loss to Mexico, while Brazil thrashed Haiti 3-0 to register its first win in this edition of the tournament.
Mexican referee Cesar Ramos is the referee in Brazil vs Scotland in FIFA World Cup 2026.
Ramos has been a full international referee for FIFA since 2014, but debuted in the Mexican second division in 2008. This will be his third FIFA World Cup, having taken charge of three games at the 2018 edition and four games at the 2022 edition.
Notably, he took charge of the France vs Morocco semifinal in 2022. The 42-year-old regularly takes charge of games in the Mexican first division.
The Mexican has also refereed at three different Club World Cups, taking charge of two games at the 2018, 2024, and 2025 editions, notably the 2018 edition’s final.
Ramos has a poor history in Brazil and Morocco for controversial calls.
At the 2018 World Cup, Brazil launched an official complaint against Ramos after its first group-stage match against Switzerland, which ended in a 1-1 draw. The South American side claimed there was a foul – on Joao Miranda – in the build up of Switzerland’s equaliser and a penalty, following a foul on Gabriel Jesus, was not given in its favour.
In Qatar 2022, denial of penalties to Morocco, during its semifinal against France, also led to the North African nation launching a complaint against Ramos.
Ramos, however, has a great reputation in Mexico for he will become the referee to have officiated most World Cup games from his country when he takes the field for Brazil vs Scotland. He has already officiated a match in the 2026 World Cup, between Iran and New Zealand, which ended in a 2-2 draw.
