New Jersey’s public rail system has further reduced its World Cup round-trip fare from the original $150 to $98, the rail operator said on Wednesday.
The latest NJ TRANSIT price cut follows an earlier reduction to $105 in May.
The proposed fares had sparked outrage among World Cup fans in the New York City area and overseas, and drew political criticism from local officials as well as U.S. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer.
Local officials had complained that FIFA was set to earn billions from the tournament while New Jersey taxpayers would bear a large share of the costs for security, disrupted services and other match-related impacts.

“We were able to reduce costs while protecting NJ TRANSIT’s daily customers and commuters from bearing the financial burden,” NJ TRANSIT Chair Priya Jain said.
The agency said the price reduction was made possible by additional advertising revenue.
The FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, begins on June 11.
