Algeria and Austria are set to face each other in a Group J match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the Kansas City Stadium on Saturday.
A draw would lift both sides to four points and guarantee their qualification for the knockout stage.
But, if either team wins the game, it would secure the runner-up spot and almost certainly knock out the other team. Even a win for either side wouldn’t be enough to unseat Argentina from top spot, though, which has a head-to-head advantage over both.
The Algeria vs Austria FIFA World Cup 2026 match will be officiated by Uzbek referee Ilgiz Tantashev.
Tantashev has been a referee since 2008, and made his Uzbekistan Super League debut in October 2010. This has been the 42-year-old’s first FIFA World Cup, and the fixture is set to be his second of the edition. His first game was taking charge of the group stage fixture between Scotland and Morocco.
In his career, Tantashev has taken charge of 307 matches across all competitions, issuing 1256 yellow cards (4.09 per game) and 80 red cards (0.26 per game).
Since his debut, Tantashev has been a regular in the Uzbekistan Super League. He has also become a dependable referee for the Asian Football Confederation, being assigned the AFC Champions League final in 2024, and the AFC Champions League Elite final in 2025. Interestingly, the Uzbek official has also taken charge of an Indian Super League playoff match, officiating the second leg of the 2020 semi-final between FC Goa and Chennaiyin FC.
