Brazil and Morocco picked up victories on Friday in Group C of the FIFA World Cup 2026 to significantly boost their chances of reaching the knockouts.

Brazil thumped Haiti 3-0 after Morocco dug in against Scotland for a hard-fought 1-0 win over Scotland earlier in the day.

What are the qualification scenarios for Group C?

As things stand, Brazil and Morocco are the frontrunners to secure direct qualification.

The two teams will be the overwhelming favourites against their respective opponents. Morocco will try to improve its goal difference against Haiti, the lowest-ranked team this World Cup, in hope of qualifying as the group winner.

Brazil will need at least a draw to secure top-two. Scotland will most probably finish in third place and will hope it ends up among the best eight third-placed teams. It will be better-placed if it ends with four points.

Only twice has a team with four points in third place in the group not advanced, ‌and both instances were at the U-20 World Cup. There is a slightly less than 50% success rate for teams finishing on three points, but those sides almost all have a positive goal difference. Three points and ‌a negative goal difference leaves a less than one-in-three chance of advancing.
