Bosnia and Herzegovina marked its return to the FIFA World Cup in style as Jovo Lukić scored the country’s first goal of the 2026 edition against co-host Canada in Toronto.
The 27-year-old headed from a set-piece situation in the 21st minute, giving the Bosnians a lead just before the first hydration break.
It was also the forward’s first goal in senior international football.
Born in Doboj, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Lukić plays for Romanian top-flight club Universitatea Cluj. Despite not being a regular fixture in the national team setup in recent years, he earned a recall for Bosnia and Herzegovina’s two pre-World Cup friendlies. The match against Canada marked his fourth senior international appearance.
Lukić came through the youth ranks at Modriča and Sloga Doboj before making his professional debut for the latter at the age of 17. He spent the early years of his career in Bosnia and Herzegovina before moving to Romania in 2024 to join Universitatea Craiova.
A year later, he signed for fellow Romanian top-flight side Universitatea Cluj and enjoyed a prolific 2025-26 campaign, scoring 20 goals.
