Uruguay started its FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign against Saudi Arabia at the Miami Stadium on Monday. Its attack is being led by Federico Vinas and Darwin Nunez.

However, one major surprise in the starting 11 is the absence of Luis Suarez, the record goalscorer of Uruguay.

Suarez was not included in the final 26-man squad by head coach Marcelo Bielsa despite announcing that he was willing to come out of retirement if required.

The former Barcelona and Liverpool striker last played for his nation in September 2024 against Paraguay.

Suarez was capped 143 times by La Celeste and is their leading international scorer with 69 goals.

Suarez’s former strike partner Edinson Cavani has also retired from international football.
