Asian juggernaut Japan will look to get its first win at FIFA World Cup 2026 when it clashes against Tunisia in the Group F match on Saturday.
Japan had to come from behind to hold Netherlands to a 2-2 draw in its tournament opener, while Tunisia was thrashed 1-5 by Sweden.
The Tunisia vs Japan FIFA World Cup 2026 Group F match will be officiated by Istvan Kovacs, who will be making his debut in the World Cup.
The Romanian has been a FIFA-approved official since 2018 and primarily officiates in the SuperLiga. He has taken charge of several high-profile games, including the first-ever Europa Conference League final between Roma and Feyenoord, which the former won 1-0.
The Romanian was amongst the headlines during Euro 2024 after dishing out 18 cards (16 yellows and 2 reds) during the group stage match between Turkiye and Czechia, making it the most in the continental competition’s history.
The following year, he officiated the UEFA Champions League final between Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan, which saw the French club win its first European title.
He has taken charge of 603 matches in his career, handing out 3267 yellow cards (including 113 second yellows) and 93 red cards in that time.
