Antonio Lopez Habas is set to leave Inter Kashi after nearly two seasons at the club, the Spanish manager announced on social media on Sunday.
Through a card that read ‘End of the chapter: Mission accomplished’, Habas wrote: ‘Trust is built through keeping commitments, and unfortunately, when those commitments are not fulfilled, trust is lost.”
Habas joined Kashi in 2024 and guided it to the I-League title the next season, becoming the only coach to have won both the I-League and the Indian Super League (ISL). However, the financial crisis at the club this season soured his relationship with the management.
“Inter Kashi is in a very, very complicated situation with a lot of problems in the club … We need to talk about the situation of the players and staff with the owner of the club, because it’s impossible to compete in the ISL”, Habas said in the press conference after Kashi’s 0-3 drubbing to Punjab last month.
“I am very, very sad about this situation. We have been fighting since the last season 100 per cent, and now it’s possible that the players and staff will not receive their salaries. It’s impossible,” Habas added.
The Spaniard had won the maiden season of the ISL with Atletico de Kolkata, and went on to guide Mohun Bagan Super Giant to the League Winners’ Shield in 2024. He remains one of the most successful coaches in Indian football in recent times.
“Together, we achieved the objectives set by the management: winning the I-League, earning promotion to the ISL, and ensuring the club remains in the top tier of professional football in India,” Habas said of his stint at Kashi.
“I want to sincerely thank all my players and staff for their respect, commitment, hard work, and professionalism throughout this journey. Wishing everyone the very best for the future.”
Habas’ Kashi plays Bagan — his former side — on Tuesday, and it remains to be seen if the coach will be on the dugout, with three more matches pending for the side in the ongoing, truncated ISL season.
