Argentina’s Lionel Messi has gotten off to a blazing start in FIFA World Cup 2026, racking up five goals from the first two group games.
Messi smashed a hat-trick against Algeria in the opener before bagging a brace against Austria on Monday.
With Argentina securing a spot in the Round of 32, Messi is now assured of at least two more games in this World Cup.
France’s Just Fontaine holds this particular record, thanks to his 13-goal haul from the 1958 World Cup.

The French striker played six games in the tournament, scoring in all of them. He pocketed two hat-tricks – a treble against Paraguay in the group stage and a quadruple against Germany in the third-place playoff.
Fontaine’s 13-goal tournament overshadowed Sandor Kocsis’ effort from 1954. The Hungarian found the net 11 times during his side’s run to the final.
Only one other player has scored 10 or more goals in a single World Cup – West Germany’s Gerd Muller, who gathered 10 in 1970.
