Lionel Messi was overwhelmed by emotions and was seen in tears after he scored the opening goal for Argentina against Algeria in FIFA World Cup 2026.

In the 17th minute, midfielder Rodrigo De Paul made a line-piercing pass to find Messi in the final third. The Argentine talisman turned towards goal, moved a few paces in front of him and slotted the ball into the top-right corner.

Messi celebrated joyfully and even struck his trademark pose, lifting his hands skywards. Broadcast visuals later showed that the 38-year-old was in an emotional state and was seen wiping his face with his jersey.

During Argentina’s last training session at home before the World Cup, Messi was pictured in a similar distraught manner.

The World Cup 2026 is expected to be Messi’s farewell tournament, as he and Argentina look to defend the title.
