Lionel Messi was named in Argentina’s starting lineup for its FIFA World Cup 2026 opener against Algeria in Kansas on Wednesday.
With this, Messi become the first player to play in six World Cups.
The Argentine icon first featured in the 2006 World Cup and has featured in all subsequent editions. Messi has played 26 World Cup games, scoring 13 goals and providing eight assists.
In 2014, Argentina, under the leadership of Messi, reached the final, only to lose to Germany in the extra time.
Messi finally achieved his coronation in 2022 in Qatar, when Argentina beat France in penalties to clinch the World Cup. He was the Golden Ball winner in both these tournaments.
