Belgium will have to come from behind in its FIFA World Cup 2026 opener after conceding a goal to Emam Ashour.

Rudi Garcia’s men have been drawn in Group G alongside Egypt, New Zealand and Iran and will be looking to progress to the knockouts for the fourth consecutive edition.

The last time the side overturned a deficit to win at the World Cup was during the 2018 edition in Russia in a famous round of 16 win over Japan.

The Belgian Red Devils fell behind to a strike from Genki Haraguchi early in the second half. Takashi Inue then scored four minutes later to double Japan’s lead.

Belgium then scored three in 21 minutes, including a 95th-minute counter-attacking winner from Nacer Chadli to complete the turnout and progress to the quarterfinal.
