Aryan Nehra became the first Indian swimmer to go below eight minutes as he clocked 7:59.36 to better his own record with a ‘best Indian time’ and secure the men’s 800m freestyle gold medal at the National aquatics championships in Ahmedabad on Saturday.

Aryan sliced two seconds off his three-year-old record to earn qualifying standards for both Commonwealth and Asian Games.

B. Benedicton Rohit lowered the National record twice, in heats and final, as he won the men’s 50m butterfly crown with 23.63. His last year’s record was 24.11, which he erased in the morning.

Rujula S. improved upon her previous year’s women’s 50m freestyle mark by achieving 26.23.
