The second round of matches in Group A at the FIFA World Cup 2026 were completed on Thursday with Mexico earning a win over South Korea and Czechia being held to draw by South Africa.
Luis Romo scored the only goal of the game for the co-host in Guadalajara while Michal Sadilek’s opener for Czechia was cancelled by a late penalty from Teboho Mokoena.
| Position | Team | Played | Wins | Draws | Losses | GD | Points |
| 1. | Mexico | 2 | 2 | 0 | 0 | +3 | 6 |
| 2. | South Korea | 2 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 3 |
| 3. | Czechia | 2 | 0 | 1 | 1 | -1 | 1 |
| 4. | South Africa | 2 | 0 | 1 | 1 | -2 | 1 |
Mexico became the first team in the tournament to seal passage to the round of 32 after back-to-back wins in Group A. A maximum of two more teams can qualify out of the group now.
South Korea can seal its place in the final 32 with a victory in its final group game against South Africa. A draw will also suffice for the Asian nation since it holds the head-to-head advantage over Czechia.
Czechia will need a win against Mexico and hope South Africa beats South Korea to make the top two. The top eight third-placed teams in the competition also proceed to the round of 32, so Czechia will still remain in contention even if Korea’s result doesn’t go its way.
If Czechia draws with or loses to Mexico in its final game and South Africa succumbs to Korea, it will still finish third but will have minimal chance of finishing in the top eight category.
South Africa can qualify if it beats South Korea in the final game and Mexico defeats Czechia. The head-to-head win over Korea will take it directly to second place in the table.
