Thailand Masters champion Devika Sihag stunned third seed Riko Gunji of Japan, while Rounak Chouhan continued his impressive run to reach the semifinals of the US Open badminton tournament on Friday.
Devika held her nerve in the closing stages of both games to beat Gunji 22-20, 21-19 in the women’s singles quarterfinals. Chouhan, meanwhile, defeated Israel’s Misha Zilberman 23-21, 21-11 in just 38 minutes to book his maiden BWF World Tour Super 300 men’s singles semifinal.
Former world No. 1 Kidambi Srikanth later strengthened India’s chances of an all-India men’s singles final, beating Chinese Taipei’s Liao Jhuo-Fu 21-9, 12-21, 21-8 in the quarterfinals.
Chouhan will next face eighth seed Su Li Yang of Chinese Taipei, while Srikanth takes on fourth seed Yudai Okimoto of Japan for a place in the final.
In the women’s singles semifinals, Devika will meet second seed Line Christophersen of Denmark, who defeated India’s Tanvi Sharma 21-16, 11-21, 21-11.
India’s Rakshitha Sree bowed out after a 15-21, 21-16, 21-12 defeat to Canada’s Rachel Chan in the quarterfinals.
