Portugal will look for its win at the FIFA World Cup 2026 when it takes on debutant Uzbekistan in its second group-stage match at the Houston Stadium in Texas, USA, on Tuesday.
The Seleção das Quinas, led by Cristiano Ronaldo, were held to a 1-1 draw by the Democratic Republic of Congo in their tournament-opener — an upset they will hope to avoid in order to secure their chances of qualifying for the round of 32 of the tournament.
Moroccan referee Jalal Jayed is the referee in Portugal vs Uzbekistan at the FIFA World Cup 2026 match in Houston.
Jayed has been on FIFA’s international list since 2019. He made his Moroccan top-flight debut in 2019 and has taken charge of matches in the Africa Cup of Nations, CAF Champions League, CAF Confederation Cup and World Cup qualifiers. He was also the referee in the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualification playoff between Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo, which the latter won on penalties.
According to available referee statistics, Jayed has officiated 101 matches, showing 388 yellow cards and 10 red cards.
Jayed is the first referee from his country to be chosen as a central referee at a FIFA World Cup in 24 years, since Mohamed Guezzaz officiated in the 2002 edition of the tournament. His first match at the World Cup was between Germany and Curacao.
