FULL-TIME
FULL-TIME; Kerala Blasters 1-1 NorthEast United FC
A golden opportunity missed by Ashley Westwood and Co. to notch up their second consecutive win of the season. Westwood’s substitutes did dazzle a bit, like Francu, but it were the changes made by Juan Pedro Benali who had the last laugh as Lalrinzuala Lalbiaknia’s goal rescued a hard-fought draw for the Highlanders.
Five minutes added
NEUFC on the ascendancy now. Is there late drama in this clash?
88'- KBFC 1-1 NEUFC; GOALLLL!
THE HIGHLANDERS HAVE EQUALISED! Arsh Shaikh comes out and dives to clear the overhead cross with a Superman-esque lunge. However, Robin Yadav lets one fly towards the empty goal. The ball bounces and strikes the crossbar but Lalbiaknia is there to turn the ball in!
82'- KBFC 1-0 NEUFC; Change
Jithin MS is brought off for Biakdika.
81'- KBFC 1-0 NEUFC; Simmering down
The tempo has simmered down. NEUFC is passing it around and KBFC is more or less parking the bus and relying on counter attacks, if it HAS to go forward. Can the Highlanders sneak in a goal and spoil Vishu for the Kerala side?
76'- KBFC 1-0 NEUFC; CLOSE!
Francu dropping his shoulders to great effect as he goes past a couple of defenders and tees up a shot. But it whizzes past a diving goalie and the goal.
72'- KBFC 1-0 NEUFC; Change for NEUFC
Robin Yadav comes on for Tlang.
71'- KBFC 1-0 NEUFC; Blow for Highlanders?
Jithin MS has gone down in anguish after copping a tackle from Ndiaye. He’s sat up now, and walking it off. So he’s good to continue for now.
68'- KBFC 1-0 NEUFC; Good tackle
Vibin had a chance to toe-poke the ball in but Arshaf runs in from behind and makes a crucial tackle. Still enough time for the Highlanders to equalise.
64'- KBFC 1-0 NEUFC; Double change for the Highlanders
Mayakkannan and Bekey are off. Rinzuala and Macarton are on for the trailing side.
63'- KBFC 1-0 NEUFC; Audacious
Parthib does well to create space over at the left flank and he tees off an audacious effort from far away. And the ball goes awry, out of play. And he looks beat.
58'- KBFC 1-0 NEUFC; Double change for Kerala
Yoke and Benarif come off as Francisco Abalo, also known as Francu, and Matias Hernanderz come on.
57'- KBFC 1-0 NEUFC; Another chance!
End-to-end action here! Samperio with a one-on-one chance but Arsh does well to make a save from point-blank range!
56'- KBFC 1-0 NEUFC; SO CLOSE!
Yoke beats Samte, who fails to clear the lines. The KBFC forward turns on the after-burners but finds the upright, perhaps after the ‘keeper gets a slight touch on it.
55'- KBFC 1-0 NEUFC; Shot!
Jithin goes past a few players, and had a clear view of the goal, but he decides to square it for Parthib. The youngster then misses, but gets a corner. But seconds later, he once again fails to find an effort on target.
52'- KBFC 1-0 NEUFC; Chance!
Kerala Blasters was close there to doubling its lead early on in the second half. Vibin confident on the ball as he strolled into the box down the left. Bertomeu was found but the forward took too long to get a shot away. NEUFC crowded the box with shirts but KBFC kept the ball for a few more seconds. The ball was squared to an onrushing Freddy, whose shot was blocked.
Second half underway
All to play for for NEUFC now.

HALFTIME
HALF-TIME; Kerala Blasters 1-0 NorthEast United
That’s the first half. Kerala has been the better side, in terms of creating chances and coming close to converting. And the efforts bore fruit late in the first half with that late goal, made by Ndiaye. NEUFC will have to sharpen its blade and Parthib Gogoi will need to step up in that effort.
43'- KBFC 1-0 NEUFC; Yellow cards
Looks like Gaitan sees yellow card for dissent. Two assistant coaches, one from each camp, were also booked.
41'- KBFC 1-0 NEUFC; GOALLL!
An own goal gives Kerala Blasters the lead! Meanwhile, tempers are flaring in the dugout. Pedro Benali is screaming at someone from the KBFC dugout.
The goal was made by Kallou Ndiaye. His initial header was blocked by a jumping Asheer. The rebound fell to Ndiaye who executed a bicycle kick. The attempt pinballed off Parthib and Gaitan, it looked, before going into the net.
39'- KBFC 0-0 NEUFC; CLOSE!
That was NorthEast United’s best chance of the half. Jithin with a pin-point cross from the right. But Parthib was a tad bit late as his sliding effort bore no fruit.
36'- KBFC 0-0 NEUFC; Chance!
Yoke with another brilliant through ball, finding Bertomeu. The latter drives forward but NEUFC’s Gaitan slides in to prevent a shot. It looked like the ball touched the NEUFC player last but a corner wasn’t given.
33'- KBFC 0-0 NEUFC; Two styles
So far, there are two distinct ways to attack, at least ones apparent to me. For NEUFC, it’s more about whipping in crosses, either from the right through Jithin MS or booting the ball forward from the backline, in hopes of finding the likes of Parthib up front.
For Kerala, it’s more about build-up play, with Vibin, Yoke instrumental in finding that through ball forward.
29'- KBFC 0-0 NEUFC; Lukewarm shot
Parthib makes a good run to get the through ball and he needed a certain shot, but he fails to make the right contact as the effort rolls away. Drinks now.
25'- KBFC 0-0 NEUFC; Silky from the host
Vibin with a cheeky back-flick, Yoke never stopping to run down the flanks. KBFC slowly finding inroads into the opposition box. But as this move ends, NEUFC has a chance to counter. But Ndiaye wins the one-on-one battle and clears the ball.
21'- KBFC 0-0 NEUFC; Possible penalty?
A cross finds itself in Bertomeu’s path, who’s battling an NEUFC player. There’s a bit of a battle there and the KBFC forward goes down, hoping for a penalty. But the referee is not interested.
20'- KBFC 0-0 NEUFC; Good moves
Both sides slowly coming into the game with ease, play flowing more effortlessly now.
16'- KBFC 0-0 NEUFC; Chance!
Great move there from the host as the smattering of fans in the stadium cheer in encouragement. Vibin plays the corner short, who then plays a one-two with Benarif, it looked like. Vibin then squared it to Freddy, whose first-time effort went over the crossbar by some distance.
12'- KBFC 0-0 NEUFC; Visitor on the prowl
Another few minutes where NEUFC was attacking. There was a chance to whip in a first-time ball from a free-kick but indecisiveness, a useless back-and-forth between two players, and a karate-esque clearance from Bikash Yumnam mid-air put an end to that move.
9'- KBFC 0-0 NEUFC; Chance!
Bekey Oram with the cross from the corner and Andres Gaitan arrives on to the ball, jumps the highest, and tries to flick it towards goal. But the header goes over the crossbar.
7'- KBFC 0-0 NEUFC; Chance!
Jithin shimmies away from his marker and curls in a low cross from the right. A few shirts in white inside the box to pounce on it but Kallou Ndiaye clears it behind for a corner.
4'- KBFC 0-0 NEUFC; Host trying to attack
Opening stages has seen NorthEast being comfortable with the ball. Kerala, on the other hand, resorting to go on the counter, hoping that the haphazard clearances from the backline find someone up front.
1'- KBFC 0-0 NEUFC; Early chance!
The away side gets itself in a good position there. Jithin MS, gets the ball on the right side, and slips it through the Kerala defence for a teammate inside the box. But the defence manages to clear the lines before the NEUFC player is able to let a shot fly.
KICKOFF!
NorthEast United gets the ball rolling, attacking from right to left at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi.
