Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who was ruled out by the onfield umpire after he was caught at short backward point, was handed a lifeline after the third umpire overruled the decision in Sooryavanshi’s favour against Afghanistan A in the tri-nation series in Dambulla on Wednesday.
The incident took place when the 15-year-old, who was batting on 0(3), cut an outside off length ball only to be intercepted by a stunning diving catch at short backward point by an Afghanistan A fielder.
However Sooryavanshi, who was on his way back to the dugout, was stopped midway after replays showed the fielder had potentially grassed the ball while completing the catch.
The third umpire subsequently overruled the decision and Sooryavanshi came back to bat, much to the discontent of the Afghanistan A fielders who believed the catch was taken cleanly.
