The second round of matches in Group G on Sunday, saw Belgium being held to a draw by Iran in Los Angeles and New Zealand losing to Egypt in Vancouver.

The Pharaohs’ first World Cup group stage win pushed it to the top of the standings with four points, ahead of Iran and Belgium.

Qualification scenarios:

Egypt can seal qualification with a point against Iran in its final match of Group G. A loss followed by a Belgium win against New Zealand could push it down to third, but that could be enough to progress as one of the eight-best third place teams.

Iran can qualify with a win over Egypt if Belgium drops points against New Zealand. If Belgium also wins, the team finishing higher will be decided on goal difference. A third successive draw for both teams will also require goal difference as the tiebreaker.

New Zealand will need to beat Belgium in its final game to stand a chance of qualification to the round of 32. There is a possibility of the side finishing third even with a win (if Iran beats Egypt). But, four points could be enough to go through as one of the best third-placed teams.
